History:
BAAP/PROCABI was started
in 1994 by Robin H. Slade,
one man who had a vision
for helping the Latino population which was not being reached with
education and information about HIV/ AIDS. He would distribute condoms
which were donated by David's Coffeehouse and private donors on the
streets of Tijuana and finally the American Humanist
Association became his sponsor to help him
in securing
Grants. In 1996 the Alliance
Healthcare Foundation
gave the first grant for thepurchase of a computer and to buy condoms for the
program.
In 1997 the AIDS
ASSOCIATION U. S.-Mexico (AAUSM)
board joined with the
BAAP and formed one board and in
1998 AAUSM was
disbanded and the Board became
the BAAP and at
the same time an advisory board was formed.
PROCABI began in 1994 as a
small, grass-roots, San Diego
based,
group of individuals committed to doing what they
could
to stop the spread of HIV / AIDS. The organization
grew to
acquire non-profit status in Tijuana in 1997 and
501c (3)
status in the United States in 1998. PROCABI has
enjoyed
successful partnership and support from the Alliance Healthcare
Foundation, the California Endowment, the California Wellness
Foundation, and other valued partners. In addition to outreach
activities, a variety of customized workshops, free HIV testing,
supportive services and support groups were provided on-site, in addition
to Education and Prevention services. In
experience, PROCABI has applied its unique rapport with the
migrant population to participate in a number of HIV/AIDS-related
research studies. PROCABI provides information regarding preventative
behavior to positives as well as negative clients. PROCABI’s core asset
is its relationship and understanding with its clients, particularly the
limited English / monolingual Spanish-speaking border population.
The primary objectives of this
Corporation are;
(a) To design and implement prevention and education
campaigns by such means as public lectures, pamphlet distribution and
the utilization of radio and television media, for the purpose of
helping to reduce the undesirable impact of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency
Virus) infection and AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) in
specifically but not limited to, the Latino community.
(b) To provide assistance, including professional and
peer counseling, medical, hospice and referral services to persons
already infected or affected by HIV/AID. Also to provide a support base
for those already infected including but not limited to, support groups,
one on one peer counseling, medication and benefits information, plus
HIV test pre and post counseling, also to provide service dog support
for those who are disabled.
Mission Statement.
Stop the spread of HIV/AIDS and
support those affected by the disease in the Latino and other
Communities. This mission is accomplished through outreach, advocacy,
prevention, education, research and support services.
