History of BAAP/PROCABI

BAAP/PROCABI was started in 1994 by Robin H. Slade as a small, grass roots, San Diego based group of individuals committed to helping stop the spread of HIV/AIDs. Slade was, a man who had a vision for giving the Latino population education and information about HIV/ AIDS which it had not previously had access to. He began by distributing condoms donated by David's Coffeehouse and a few private donors on the streets of Tijuana. Finally, the American Humanist Association became his sponsor and helped him to secure grants. In 1996, the Alliance Healthcare Foundation gave the BAAP/PROCABI its first grant for the purchase of a computer for the program and condoms to distribute.

In 1997, the AIDS ASSOCIATION U.S.-Mexico (AAUSM) board joined with the BAAP/PROCABI to form a single board. The organization grew to acquire non-profit status in Tijuana in 1997 and 501c (3) status in the United States in 1998. At that time, AAUSM was disbanded and the Board became the BAAP, at which time an advisory board was formed.

BAAP/PROCABI has enjoyed successful partnership with and support from the Alliance Healthcare Foundation, the California Endowment, the California Wellness Foundation, and other valued partners. Outreach activities, a variety of customized workshops, free HIV testing, other supportive services, and on-site support, were provided to in addition to dducation and prevention services. Through its growing experience, PROCABI has gained a unique rapport with the migrant population and been able to participate in a number of HIV/AIDS-related research studies. PROCABI provides information regarding preventative behavior to HIV positive clients as well as negative clients. PROCABI’s core asset is its relationship and understanding with its clients, particularly the limited English / monolingual Spanish-speaking border population.
